FSG Updates Lighting In The Worlds Largest Food Distribution Center

Challenge

The Hunts Point Cooperative Market Inc. is a cooperative primarily involved in the process and distribution of meat and meat products in the tri-state area. The facility is the largest of its kind in the world and is the major distribution hub for the New York City metro area. Customers of the market consist of all of the large chain store supermarkets, most of the tri-state areas top restaurants, hotels, and country clubs, as well as large and mom and pop butcher shops up and down the east coast. The Coop consists of 52 companies that process and distribute meat and meat products in just under one million square feet.

Solution

FSG updated lighting in offices, coolers, loading docks and processing areas, as well as exterior lighting. Coordination of the installation was complex, with 52 individual companies and round the clock schedules all needing to be addressed. Offices received new 2X2 high-efficiency fixtures, while vapor-tight fixtures were updated to new LED vapor-tights with occupancy sensors. Existing HID high bay fixtures were replaced with new LED high bays and LED screw-in lamps of various types and sizes were installed throughout. Exterior HID fixtures were replaced with new LED fixtures.

Result

The lighting load to the building was reduced by over 512 kW. Maintenance costs were reduced dramatically, and new high-efficiency fixtures and lamps provide up to 5 times longer life. New sensors turn off lights during periods of vacancy that were previously left burning, providing even more energy savings.
