Port Authority Bus Terminal New York, New York
ChallengeThe Port Authority Bus Terminal (PABT) is the main gateway for interstate buses into Manhattan in New York City. Located in the heart of Times Square, it is not only the nation's largest bus terminal, it's also the world's busiest, serving over 200,000 passengers a day. FSG was tasked with updating the lighting throughout the facility, which included both passenger vehicle and bus garages, gates, ramps, the expressway between the terminal and the Lincoln tunnel, retail concourses, back of house and office areas. The facility operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There were many high ceiling areas in the concourses, some over escalators, that required the assembly of special scaffolding. The priority was to complete all work with a minimum disruption to commuting passengers.
SolutionCar and bus areas, garages, roadways and ramps utilized High Pressure Sodium fixtures with a 24,000 hour life and poor color. Over 1,800 new induction fixtures were installed, providing crisp white light and a 100,000 lamp life. LED and high efficiency fluorescent lighting replaced existing T12 and HID lighting throughout the gate areas, retail concourses, back of house and offices. FSG scheduled work around the clock to minimize disruptions.
ResultThe new lighting system improved light levels and appearance while saving energy and maintenance costs. The facility was able to operate without disruption as the lighting was installed. Lamps in the garages and on ramps now last over eleven years, versus less than three years with the old lighting system.
