FSG Provides Electrical Construction Services for New-Build University Residence Hall

Challenge

At Sam Houston State University (SHSU) in Huntsville, Texas, a growing student population required additional housing. This urgent need was addressed in the university's Master Plan and was enthusiastically supported during a four-year Capital Campaign that ended in September 2020. With funding in place, the university set out to partner with a Design-Build general contractor that could deliver a new residence hall for the campus.

In selecting DPR Construction, SHSU decided to go with a GC with a proven track record for embracing integrated lean techniques and the latest modeling technology to deliver cost- and time-saving ideas without sacrificing quality. Most importantly to the university, DPR was willing to track project performance against tightly defined project goals, with active university oversight throughout the project and an established audit function built into the project. To support this important, high-profile construction project, DPR chose FSG's Houston branch to execute the electrical construction work scope.

Solution

According to the winning design, the new SHSU North Residence Hall will be a 186,000 square foot, 5-story student housing project. The new residence hall will provide retail space, a commons, multipurpose rooms, laundry facilities, and housing for resident advisors and directors on Level 1. Levels 2-5 will contain student living quarters, study rooms, and lounge areas for students to use and enjoy.

Throughout the construction project, FSG is working alongside DPR to ensure the GC meets its goals. From pre-construction planning and design to product installation and beyond in support of an ongoing customer relationship, FSG is delivering the type of service DPR requires to meet the strict requirements of this fast and challenging project. For this project, all work is being conducted in the middle of a busy, crowded campus full of students and faculty members. For FSG crews, safety and logistical discipline are core considerations that ensure materials arrive when they should, where they should, and how they should, with minimal impact on the normal activities taking place all around the construction site.

Result

Sam Houston State University's 15th residence hall will be remembered as a landmark project thanks to the construction methods employed during the build. With all interior and exterior walls prefabricated off-site, and with each floor slab and roof poured in place, the project represents the latest thinking in project speed, efficiency, and quality control. When completed - just in time for the Fall 2022 semester - the North Residence Hall will provide the additional 640 beds on the north side of the main campus in Huntsville.
