FSG Supplies Top-Level Electrical Construction Services for League City Hospital Expansion

Challenge

When the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) decided to begin a Phase II expansion project for its League City hospital location, it selected Hensel Phelps to serve as General Contractor. With over 42 years of experience and a $7.5 billion healthcare project portfolio, Hensel Phelps was no stranger to hospital construction projects. The GC knew that project success begins and ends with the team you gather, and for this important hospital project, Hensel Phelps selected FSG to provide the electrical construction work.

Solution

The new five-story patient tower included 60 new patient beds, a state-of-the-art sterile processing area, pharmacy and clinical lab spaces, along with a new kitchen, servery, and dining area. Site work included the construction of a new helipad, receiving dock, and emergency department access drive. The project tied directly into the active hospital, which required a great deal of early coordination between FSG and the GC, and a comprehensive sequencing plan to ensure minimal impacts to ongoing operations.

In addition to the patient tower, the project included over 25,000 SF of renovation work in the existing hospital facility to help support other necessary department expansions. Renovation work included build-out of an eight-bed Emergency Department, Endoscopy and Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) suite, and an 11-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Each renovation area included its own unique set of challenges, and FSG's project team was able to showcase its ability to plan, manage and remain flexible to meet its customer's needs.

Result

In April 2020, UTMB’s expanded League City hospital opened to the public on an accelerated schedule, in response to the project owner’s request that the facility be rushed to completion so that it could join in the area’s COVID-19 response. The Phase II expansion was seen as a clear success for Hensel Phelps, and FSG was proud to play a role in delivering excellent construction services on another important project.
