William Paterson University Paterson, New Jersey
ChallengeA leading public University with nearly 11,000 students, William Paterson offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs through its five academic colleges: Arts and Communication, Cotsakos College of Business, Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Science and Health. Its 370-acre wooded campus is located in suburban Wayne, New Jersey, just 20 miles from New York City, adjacent to 1,200 acres of wetlands and woodlands, and only three miles from the historic Paterson Great Falls. The campus suffered from older lighting systems, including many different outdoor HID fixtures with dozens of lamp types and wattages
SolutionFSG upgraded lighting both indoors as well as outdoors. Inside, the gym, weight rooms, racquetball courts, pool and basketball courts all received new lighting. The new lighting provided dramatically improved light levels, suitable for the class of play and video/TV broadcasting. Occupancy sensors were also installed in classrooms and lab's. Over 1,000 outdoor induction fixtures were installed on buildings, poles and under newly installed solar shading canopies.
ResultIn addition to energy savings of over 50%, the new lighting systems greatly reduced lighting maintenance on campus. Induction lighting has a life of 100,000 hours, over 5 times longer than the HID lighting it replaced. Rebates covered up to 80% of the material and labor costs of a large portion of the measures.
