Witte Building in San Antonio San Antonio, TX

Case Study
FSG Delivers Reliable Electrical Construction and Remodeling for San Antonio’s Historic Witte Building

Challenge

With frontage on the world-famous River Walk, the historic Witte Building at 135 E. Commerce Street in San Antonio, Texas, already had the three most important ingredients required for commercial success: location, location, location. The problem for the new building owner was that the building was built in 1866, and despite a long history of commercial success over the years, the building was tired, out of code, and in need of a complete renovation. Douglas Architects submitted a plan to the owner that included additional construction to fully incorporate riverfront commercial options, and General Contractor Guido Construction was brought on to manage the project. For the electrical construction and remodeling work required to transform the Witte Building, Guido Construction turned to FSG’s San Antonio branch.

Solution

With project approval from San Antonio’s Historic and Design Review Commission, work began on the Witte Building. FSG worked with project engineers to oversee the various code compliance issues related to the original building as well as to the new construction elements that were part of the design. With restaurant space on the street and river levels and residential units on the upper floors, the project required the full depth of FSG’s experience with commercial, residential, and sensitive historic developments.

Result

The project was notable for the number of change orders that took place during the construction phase. However, FSG worked hard for all stakeholders on the Witte Building project, and in the end, delivered electrical work that ensured an iconic River Walk destination would remain reliable and safe for many more years to come. As the project came to an end in Spring 2021, local residents and visitors to San Antonio joined the building’s new owner in welcoming back an old friend, completely restored and better than ever.
