FSG delivered a resilient lighting retrofit for the George Washington Bridge, built to endure its intense environment while meeting strict performance standards.
Executive Summary
The George Washington Bridge when built was twice as long as any previous suspension bridge, it was the marvel of its time and, to some, it will always be the noblest of all bridges. The retrofit of the exterior fixtures on both the bridge and the TME required extensive design to both meet the light level requirements and provide lighting that could withstand the vibration and intense environment. New lighting systems were installed by FSG New Jersey lighting team on time and on schedule, with minimal disruption.
Project Highlights
- Completed a LED lighting retrofit for the George Washington Bridge and Trans‑Manhattan Expressway
- Achieved a 50–75% wattage reduction, improved CRI from 22 to 80, and extended lamp life to 100,000 hours
- Executed installation with minimal traffic disruption, coordinating lane closures during off‑peak hours
