FSG Delivers Showcase Electrical Construction Project on Short Timeline for Collin College

Challenge

When Collin College chose Skanska to create a brand new 339,000 square-foot campus on 96 acres in Wylie, Texas, the General Contractor knew it needed to partner with an electrical construction company with the size and experience needed to meet an extremely tight project timeline. To complete a work scope that included ground-up electrical construction for five new buildings in only 18 months, the selected contractor would need to hit the ground running with a solid project management team and the logistical depth and breadth required to deliver the project on time for the owner. For this project with very little margin for error, Skanska decided to work with FSG.

Solution

FSG joined the team Skanska had assembled and began work on the new Collin College campus in Wylie. As the electrical contractor for the entire project, FSG provided temporary power, installed whole-building transformers, pulled wiring through walls, and installed both interior and exterior lighting fixtures. The final electrical design had been established before work began, but as is often the case on large jobs, pop-up changes resulted in FSG fulfilling a design-assist role at various points on the project. To keep work moving smoothly, FSG leveraged its extensive distribution network to ensure materials arrived just in time, despite the challenges presented by the global coronavirus pandemic in 2020.

Result

With an understanding that a General Contractor’s most important selling points are “team and timeline”, FSG delivered on both counts for Skanska. Utilizing a team of 110 electricians led by experienced project management, FSG was able to complete the job on time and to the standards required by the GC and the project owner.

FSG’s focus and professionalism extended beyond the original scope of work required for Collin College. During the final days of the project, with crews busy cleaning up workspaces and wiping down fixtures, the owner approached FSG with an additional request for help in hanging a large-scale art piece intended to serve as a focal point within the Student Center. The FSG project team jumped at the opportunity to be of service, bringing in specialized lifts, suspending cable from atrium ceilings, laying out grid lines with lasers on the floor, and completing the art installation above the building’s central staircase. The art installation served as an exclamation point for the project and proved to be a pleasure for FSG, the project owner, and for future students chasing their dreams at Collin College.
