Driscoll Children’s Hospital | Emergency Power Corpus Christi, Texas

Case Study
FSG Delivers Backup Power to Driscoll Children's Hospital

Challenge

Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas is a 191-bed tertiary care center offering 32 medical and 13 surgical specialties. The hospital serves a vast area of South Texas and treats more than 100,000 children every year from 31 surrounding counties. A major renovation and expansion project broke ground in 2016, with plans to construct a new five-story North Pavillion building in front of the hospital to house a new outpatient surgery center and pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). Driscoll Children’s Hospital understood the importance of the project, not just for the local community in Corpus Christi, but for the region as well.

A key component of the electrical work scope for the project involved the installation of a completely new emergency power system, including a new Kohler 1750 generator set, to provide coverage for the new facility's life safety systems. With expectations running sky-high for the project, Driscoll Children’s Hospital engaged the services of the area’s most established and trusted General Contractor, Fulton Construction. For Fulton, project success was primarily dependent on assembling the right team, and for the expansion project's electrical construction work scope, their first pick was FSG.

Solution

FSG was Fulton's go-to electrical contractor when the Driscoll Children’s Hospital project began. Having already worked together on numerous projects in and around Corpus Christi, Fulton considered FSG a key player for projects of all sizes, but especially for high-visibility, high-stakes construction projects like Driscoll Children’s Hospital.

The emergency power component of the project's electrical work scope was executed flawlessly by FSG's Corpus Christi team. Project electricians oversaw the installation of the new Kohler generator set and provided all connections to a dual docking station, load banks, and emergency switchgear. The chillers, boilers, and building control systems located in the hospital's new central plant were brought up to a higher level of emergency preparedness following completion of the work.

Result

FSG delivered quality work on schedule for Fulton Construction and the project owners at Driscoll Children’s Hospital. Although the larger project included many months of electrical work performed to the satisfaction of all stakeholders, the emergency power work scope delivered a measure of security and peace of mind for the administrators at the hospital.
