FSG Delivers Top Network Design and Cabling Services for Massive Hospital Expansion Project

Challenge

In 2013, when San Antonio's Methodist Hospital announced the largest construction project in its history, the massive $200 million project represented a huge commitment to the city and a huge investment in quality healthcare for the region. For all stakeholders involved in the project, the pressure was on.

General Contractor Skanska knew they had to partner with only the best subcontractors on this high-profile project. The plan called for expanding the footprint of the Methodist Hospital campus at San Antonio's South Texas Medical Center by 445,000 square feet, through the renovation and expansion of both Methodist Hospital and Methodist Children’s Hospital.

To complete the voice, data, video, and security network design for the project, Skanska turned to FSG's San Antonio branch and its network technology partner, Tero Technologies.

Solution

The project was extensive and involved multiple mobilizations, requiring detailed coordination with Skanska and various other trades. Of primary importance to the project owner was the fact that all work would be carried out in an active hospital environment. Therefore, every task had to be scheduled and executed to avoid unnecessary interruption to normal hospital operations. FSG and its Tero designers confirmed the plans and specifications with Skanska, then proceeded to execute the work scope reliably according to the evolving needs of this multi-year project.

Result

The Methodist Hospital expansion project was a smashing success for Skanska, the project owner, and most of all for area residents who now had expanded access to world-class healthcare services. Every aspect of FSG's required work scope was executed to the highest standards, and the project stands today as an example of how structured cabling and networking can elevate the final project deliverable for the owner.

After the project was complete, FSG received an honor that didn't appear in the Grand Opening press releases that were showing up on local and regional media outlets. Quietly, and away from the bright lights of a ribbon-cutting ceremony, Methodist Healthcare requested that FSG and its San Antonio Tero Technology team work directly for them on future projects. For FSG, this was the ultimate measure of project success!
