Port Authority of New York & New Jersey: World Trade Center Oculus New York, New York
When the Port Authority NYNJ wanted to enhance the look of the iconic Oculus metro station in lower Manhattan, they turned to Constellation Energy and FSG to help them create an inspiring new look using RGB lighting.
ChallengeThe $4 billion Oculus metro station house, designed by Santiago Calatrava, consists of white ribs that interlock high above the ground. The structure is located in the heart of lower Manhattan in the shadow of the inspiring One World Trade Center. Every year, millions of people pass through the Oculus and the World Trade Center grounds and memorial plaza. With such an iconic address, the Port Authority wanted to bring an extra bit of flair to the Oculus structure, while also reducing the energy consumption of the lighting that is key to the building's impressive presentation at night.
SolutionFSG and Constellation Energy went to work for the Port Authority, designing and implementing a lighting upgrade to more than 13,000 lighting fixtures to high-efficiency LED technology, which reduces energy consumption and increases the life expectancy of the lamps. Additionally, the new lighting offers the Port Authority the flexibility of RGB along with a controls system that allows facility managers to control the color and theme of the lighting with only a few keystrokes. Other WTC sites to receive the upgrades included the Vehicle Security Center, Central Chiller Plant, PATH fare and platform area, Transportation Hub, and various back of house spaces.
ResultIn the end, the RGB LED not only saved money for the Port Authority but also enhanced the beauty and wonder of the property for everyone who visits the site.
