PANYNJ: World Trade Center Oculus New York, New York
When then PANYNJ wanted to enhance the look of the iconic structure of The Oculus in downtown Manhattan, they turned to Constellation Energy and FSG to help them create an inspiring new look using RGB lighting.
ChallengeThe $4 billion Oculus station house, designed by Santiago Calatrava, consists of white ribs that interlock high above the ground. The structure is located in the heart of downtown Manhattan in the shadow of the inspiring One World Trade Center. Every year, millions of people view the Oculus and the World Trade Center grounds and memorial plaza. With such an iconic address, the Port Authority wanted to try and bring an extra bit of flare to the Oculus structure, while also reducing the energy consumption the lighting that is key to the buildings impressive presentation at night.
SolutionFSG and Constellation Energy went to work for the PA, designing and implementing a lighting upgrade for more than 13,000 lighting fixtures to high-efficient LED technology, which reduces energy consumption and increases the life expectancy of the lamps. Additionally, the new lighting offers the PA the flexibility of RGB and a controls system that allows the Port Authority to control the color and theme of the lighting with the click of a few keystrokes. Other WTC sites to receive the upgrades include: Vehicle Security Center, Central Chiller Plant, PATH fare and platform area, Transportation Hub and back of house spaces.
ResultIn the end, the RGB LED not only saved money for the Port Authority, but also enhanced the beauty and wonder of the property for everyone who visits the site.
