FSG Provides Electrical Construction for LEED-Certified North Texas Football Stadium Complex

Challenge

In Denton, Texas, the Board of Regents of the University of North Texas knew the time had come to build a new stadium for their beloved Mean Green football team. However, they did not want to build just any stadium. The design for what would eventually be named Apogee Stadium included a long list of environmentally friendly methods and materials, with an eye toward attaining Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certification upon completion of the construction project. With high expectations and a need for a quality electrical contractor with the necessary expertise and experience required, General Contractor Manhattan Construction Company turned to FSG's Dallas branch to complete the electrical work scope on this $78 million stadium project.

Solution

FSG provided ground-up electrical service, as well as the interior and exterior lighting systems for the project. The design for the new football complex involved state-of-the-art LED lighting and controls throughout the facility. Additionally, two large video scoreboards were installed. The multi-level stadium includes modern suites, dining facilities, and press levels, in addition to two full-size visitor locker rooms and a locker room for officials.

Result

Apogee Stadium opened in 2011 to wide acclaim from students, alumni, university administrators, and local citizens. First-time visitors to the stadium were transfixed by the three 120-foot wind turbines that identify the stadium from miles away while providing a near-constant supplement to the stadium's energy grid. In fulfillment of its original design goals, the facility officially became the first new-built stadium to achieve the prestigious Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certification. Over time, the rave reviews kept coming and Apogee Stadium was recognized by media outlets and industry groups across the country and around the world for its forward-thinking design and especially for the professional execution of this ambitious construction project.
