Recently, I was walking through our signs shop in Austin Texas looking at some of the projects our team was working on when I stumbled upon a bucket of baseballs. Our signs manager, David Jacobs, was pointing out the work we were doing for a large retailer and telling me about a new opportunity they had just landed for the wayfinding signage in an airport parking garage when I saw the bucket of baseballs.
As David was telling me about the next big retail signage project the team was getting ready to start, I stopped him and asked, “what are those baseballs for?”
He got a smile on his face and said “oh, those? Yeah, that’s one of our projects.” He walked over and moved a piece of metal to reveal that the one bucket of baseballs I had seen was accompanied by a whole pallet of brand-new baseballs.
I asked David, “What kind of signs project takes baseballs— not to mention that many?”
He explained that, along with some traditional channel letter signage and wayfinding signage, FSG had been awarded a small project putting together a Texas flag mural made entirely out of baseballs for a Major League Baseball team.
I told him I wanted pictures and a video of the project because it wasn’t every day a sign company got to build a Texas flag mural out of baseballs.
A few weeks later, my e-mail inbox dinged, and low and behold, there it was—a gallery with both pictures and videos of our signs manufacturing team, guys and girls who are normally building large-scale pylon and channel letter signs, drilling holes in and painting more than 900 baseballs.
A few days after that, my e-mail dinged again, and there, buried in the attachments of spreadsheets and contracts, sat a link to a folder full of pictures of a Texas flag made from 988 baseballs. There’s a lot I could say about the project, but I think it’s best to let the pictures speak for themselves.
So maybe baseball flag murals aren’t our bread-and-butter. Traditional signage like channel letters, pylon signs, and electronic messaging centers are where we spend most of our time. However, I needed a good project–and a good headline—that I’d knew you’d click!
